Sonic and the others can communicate with the Chao through the special "Chao Garden" in each Zone. Similar to NiGHTS' Nightopians, the Chao must be well-treated if they are to breed and multiply successfully. Good relationships with the Chao will be rewarded as they bring you items and will approach you as you pass. Mistreat them, and they will make faces and throw rocks at you.
Individual Chao may be plucked from the game and stuck into your VMS. From there, the game becomes a mini-RPG. The object: to train your chosen Chao (up to eight on any one VMS) into the ultimate racer.
The first step is to mix animals together. This is done in any one of the Chao Gardens. You select two of the little suckers and decide which animal you want them to morph into, giving them the attributes of those species. You then carry one over to the other, and drop it right on top...the two Chao morph into one, and appear as a combination of the two animals you mixed. Certain combos make better racers than others, and there is one "ultimate racer" in the game. (I can just see the wasted hours I'm going to spend trying to breed this "ultimate racer" for no reason other than to say I've seen it and know how to get it...)

Now that you've created your racing machine, it's time to train the little fellow! Pop him into your VMS unit, then choose the mood and running course for the day. As the the little drip runs the courses for the day, he will walk, fly, swim, find treasures, get into fights, etc. While the Chao is racing to the goal, you can exchange mail with him. When you feel he's ready, put your speed demon to the test against other players' racers.
Like Bandai's Digi-Mon virtual pets, you don't control your little trainee to victory in the races. The computer determines which of the two Chao has the greater potential, and automatically gives him the crown.
