Sarah asked as the bell rang. No one replied. They were too busy clearing out. It was Friday, and Halloween and everyone wanted to get home so they could get ready to party. "He didn't come in today," the teacher replied. "You wouldn't mind stopping by his home and giving him the assignment, would you?" Sarah shook her head. "I...guess not." The teacher handed her a copy of notes with a yellow post-it on it. "That's his address. Thank you, Miss Aylward. Have a good weekend." Local: The Demon's Claw Club Nexus Jarre sat in the booth. Smoke drifted up to the rafters from his lit cigarette. Around him sat three of his top "people". "Karras," He turned to a black demon with red eyes, and a shaved head. "Tell me what you've found." "Yes, sir." Karras cleared his throat. "We've located the amulet in this building here." He pointed to a red circle on a map. "I've had our agents surround and secure it. They've all been given your explicit instructions not to touch it for any reason." "Excellent," Nexus replied, inhaling. "Seta, Mishel, I cannot tell you how sorry I am that your dear sister Cybele is no longer with us." "Just point me towards the bastard that killed her," Mishel replied. She had Cybele's eyes and black hair. "We'll take care of him. Family honor decrees it," Seta added. She was the image of Cybele with blond hair and purple-ringed blue eyes. "Yeah, sure. You'll get your chance. If he shows up at the party I want you to take care of it," Nexus replied. "Yes, sir," they chimed. Nexus smiled. "And how is our little guest, Tamashii? You know the amulet's magic is useless to me without her." Karras cleared his throat. "About the girl-" Nexus looked up. "What about the girl?" "She...uh...that is...We had a little accident..." "Accident...?" "One of the Shadow Dragons...uh...ate her." Nexus grabbed Karras by the throat. "WHAT?!" "I can't breathe-" he gagged and choked. Nexus shoved the other demon away. "You know I can't perform the Ceremony without someone to sacrifice! Tonight is All Hallow's Eve, people! Tonight! And you're telling me I don't have anyone?!" He slammed a hand on the table. "You know how it works! One female child or..." he trailed off and smiled. "A young male." "Use Karras," Seta smiled. "He's the one responsible. Wouldn't you like to-" "Karras is a weak fool. I need someone strong..." Mishel looked up. "You know, sir, that little bother Zephyr blotched up the attack on the Angel." "My dear Mishel, how I love the way you think," Nexus ground out his cigarette on the table. "Someone track me down Zephyr and bring him to the house. I want this done in time for the party." Local: A roof across from the old mansion Zephyr was seated on the roof across from the old mansion. Mishel walked over to him and cleared her throat. "Can I help you?" he asked, not looking up from the gun he was polishing. "Nexus wants to see you." "I'm busy." "Really." She sighed. "You know, Zephyr, after all Nexus has done for you..." He muttered softly under his breath and stood. "All right." "Follow me." Chapter Two: Local: The Mansion Zephyr followed Mishel into the mansion. She led him into a room where Nexus stood waiting. "Zephyr..." he extended an arm around the younger demon's shoulders. "Leave us, Mishel." She did. "What did you want me for?" Zephyr asked. "Zephyr, we've been together a long time, haven't we?" "Since I was a few weeks old." "And I've always taken care of you, haven't I?" "Always." He nodded. "And, if I was to ask you to do me just one little favor to repay that debt, would you?" To anyone else this might seem a strange request, but it was well known that Shadow Demons never did anything unless there was some personal gain involved. "I would. It's only fair." "My friend, I am so glad you feel that way." Nexus led him into a room where an alter stood. Around it three circles were burned into the floor. "What is this place, Nexus?" Zephyr asked, looking around. "A very sacred place. A very special place." Nexus replied. He led Zephyr up to the alter. "You see this?" Zephyr peered at the object resting on it. "It looks like an amulet." "It is." Nexus cleared his throat. "Three thousand years ago there was this ravishingly beautiful demoness who lived and served Akugou as no other. But you know the times back then, being a female simply didn't mean a thing to those men in charge. To gain any power, any respect you had to be a man. So this beauty did something about it." "She murdered those lords and proved that the females are even more dangerous than the males?" Zephyr asked. "No you...dear child," Nexus smiled. "She got herself cursed." "Oh...How does that improve her situation?" "Simple. It made her a male. But it had a little tiny teeny drawback. Every 200 years she had to sacrifice a female child to stay a man." Nexus tapped a slender finger against his chin. "And if she couldn't find the chosen child...she had to get someone else. Someone like a young male. So, do you see where you come in?" Zephyr shook his head. "But you're not a girl." "And I don't intend to go back to being one!" Nexus yelled. "I raised you from a baby, Zephyr, I'm practically your parent! And what child wouldn't give his life for his parent?" Zephyr tried to back away, but Nexus's grip on his shoulders was too tight. "But why do it?" "Oh he wants a reason!" Nexus laughed. "What, the need for power, respect, and to be taken seriously isn't enough for you?" "A serious warrior would fight for that," Zephyr managed. "Isn't that what you taught me?" "All right then, little one," Nexus whispered into his ear. "I...like...girls. And for a *girl* to like girls didn't go over very well in that time or this time for that matter." "That's a stupid reason." "Ha hah! Cocky even in the face of defeat; just like a Sephiroth!" Nexus laughed, and reached down for the amulet. "And this little piece of jewelry makes it all possible. You see, once it's on the chosen, and the curse is re-administered, the Ceremony is complete, and I'm all done for another 200 years. So be a good boy and hold still while I put it on you." Zephyr still couldn't move. "It's too bad that I had to paralyze you, but I've learned from the past that victims are usually less than cooperative." He looped the chain around Zephyr's neck. "And now to seal it with a kiss." Zephyr couldn't even turn away. Nexus gave him a long kiss, and then shoved him to the floor. "Well, thanks again, pal. So nice to know I can count on you in a moment of need." He brushed himself off. "Hm, so that didn't kill you? You must be stronger than the last one. Oh well, don't feel too bad. There's always room for you in our happy little family. I'm sure with a little time you'll adjust to the changes. Mishel!" Mishel came back in. "Yes, sir?" "Get our little friend, Zephy, cleaned up! There's a party happening here and we're all going to attend!" He grabbed the amulet from Zephyr's neck as Mishel led him away. He tossed it onto the alter. "See you in another 200 years!" Chapter Three: Local: Sarah's Apartment, Evening Sarah adjusted her costume. She'd looked at Lir's address and saw that it was right near where the party was being held. Figuring it'd be easier to just drop it off on the way she'd gone home instead. "I still don't understand who you're supposed to be," her roommate Tonia said. Tonia was smaller than Sarah with dark hair and brown eyes. Sarah turned. "Can't you tell? The other girl shook her head. "Well, tell me what you are first." "I'm an elf," Tonia said, disgusted. "Didn't the ears give you a clue?" "Oh. Right." She adjusted her skirt. "Well, aren't you going to guess who I am?" "I'm not sure I want to know." "I'm Honey! From Fighting Vipers!" Sarah announced. "Do you think Lir will like it?" "Lir? Lir Shadows? He doesn't strike me as the type who plays video games." Tonia shrugged. "I'm sure Erik Black will notice." "Eeeeeeew..." Sarah muttered. "He's such a jerk." "Yeah, but you did invite him." "No I didn't. He invited himself." Tonia sighed. "Well, who cares? He's coming." "Yeah." Sarah fixed her black wig. "We should go. We want to get there before anyone else so we can set up. And don't forget I have to drop his stuff off." "I've already got everything in the car," Tonia replied. "Try not to bend over or anything while you're wearing that skirt." Local: Lir's Apartment Sarah rechecked the address and knocked. The pile of papers was threatening to slip out of her hands again. What was taking him so long to answer? Was he really that sick? Slowly footsteps echoed across the floor, and the sound of the dead-bolt unlatching was heard. "Hi Lir!" Sarah gushed as the door opened. "I brought the work you missed from class today! The teacher asked me to and it was on my way and I hope you're feeling all right and gee you are still coming to the party aren't you?" Whoosh...she gulped in a big breath of air, and snuck a look up at him. His green eyes were watching her with a look of part amusement, part something else. "That was tonight, wasn't it?" His voice sounded...off. "Yeah, yeah. Tonight *is* Halloween..." She shifted from one foot to another. "When's it start again?" "Uh, Tonia and I are just headed over there now to help the DJ set up." Sarah looked behind her. "Did you want to, um, come?" "Well, I haven't quite finished helping my friends get ready...would you come in and wait a few minutes? It should be quick." "Friends?" Sarah blinked. "I didn-" "They came down for Halloween," Lir told her opening the door. "It was kinda last minute." Sarah looked up at him as she came in. "Nice Sephiroth costume." "I had to throw something together at the last minute," he shrugged. "Nani?!" somebody exclaimed as she walked in. "Someone's wearing my outfit! Make her change!" "You change, Gibbon!" another boy called. "You're the one in drag!" "Hey shut up, Ash! You're just jealous that my costume is better than yours! Cloud Strife! Bah!" "You could be Cid, Gibbon," a girl's voice called from upstairs. "But I don't smoke!" the guy named Gibbon called back. "You be Cid, Moon!" "I'm not dressing in drag!" "Be Sailor Evil then!" "Noooooo! I wanna dress up!" "But Sailor Evil is dressing up!" "I'm not dressing up as Sailor Evil!" "Sailor who?" Sarah asked Lir. "Private joke." He led her into the kitchen. A blond boy was leaning against the counter, and Sarah immediately recognized the costume as Cloud's. Another person was sitting at the table in a Honey costume. "Um...hi," she waved. "I'm Sarah Aylward. I go to school with Lir." "I'm Ash Guardian," the Cloud boy said. "This here's Midori Saru." "Call me Gibbon, everyone does," the other boy said. "Love the outfit." "Guys!" a girl's voice called. "You're not helping me here!" "Who's that?" Sarah asked. "My sister," Ash replied. "She came here with no idea for a costume." "I suggested Aeris but she shot that down," Gibbon muttered. "How about Naga, Moon?" "I'm not going as Naga! It's cold outside!" "All the more reason to-" Gibbon sniffled. "Excuse me, I not-think I'm getting a nose bleed." "Guys!" She walked into the room. "You're not helping me here!" Sarah stared. Moon happened to be a small, silvery-blond haired girl with big dark blue eyes...who was wearing nothing but a long dress-shirt. It didn't matter the thing came down past her knees...it was the principal of the thing. Sarah stared at that wet hair for a moment then grinned. "Be Sophia-roth." "Who?" Ash looked at Lir. "Sophia-roth," Sarah explained. "Is the female counter-part of Sephiroth created by someone named 'Hell Kitty'." "Sopia-roth?" Lir shuddered. "A girl Sephiroth...that's twisted!" "Sophia-roth!" Gibbon gasped. "I bet this girl knows Zero!" "Sophia-roth?" Moon looked at Lir. "Is she real, Lir?" "*I've* never heard of anyone like that," he cleared his throat. "Any idea what you can do for a costume?" "I'm sure I can come up with something." Moon told them. "Everyone wait right here!" She raced back up stairs. Ash chuckled. "She's such a kid." "How old is she?" Sarah asked. "Seventeen," Lir replied. "Did you find what you needed, Moon?" "Hai!" "What now?" Sarah asked. "Have a seat," Lir gestured to the table. He continued to lean against the wall by Ash. "Is she going to be a long time?" Sarah asked. "I mean you can't just have the things she needs just laying around." "You'd be surprised what she finds," Lir shrugged. "Yeah, but-" "Just a few more minutes!" Moon called down. "How...how is she going to possibly have a costume in just a few more minutes?" Sarah asked. "I'd tell you," Lir smirked a little. "But it's a secret." Chapter Four: Local: The Mansion Zephyr was in a daze. Mishel had "cleaned-up" just like Nexus told her too. But no amount of "cleaning-up" could do enough to hide the change Zephyr had undergone. He had somehow become female. In all honestly there had been no feeling of it happening, so it was hard to judge how long ago it had occurred. "It must have happened when Lord Nexus worked his spell," Mishel told Zephyr. She ran a brush through his...her hair. His...her...her...his it was still all muddled. *He* couldn't quite force himself to use female pronouns when thinking, but Mishel seemed to be having no trouble. She prattled on and on, brushing or trying to coax Zephyr into a costume. But Zephyr didn't budge. He just stared straight ahead into the heavily-lashed, vibrant green eyes in the mirror. The ones whose silver rings had faded away to non-existence. You what this means, a little voice in his head asked. Yeah, he replied, I'm serious screwed over. Mishel pushed at his pale silver hair. It was probably his only feature that hadn't changed at all. It was still shoulder length with the folded over bangs falling at unequal length. On side swooped underneath his chin while the other side fell to the same shoulder length as the rest of his hair. "Cheer up, luv," Mishel told him. "You're very beautiful. Anyone would be jealous. The difference one little chromosome makes. And it could be worse, you could be dead after all..." Zephyr ignored her and wondered if he grabbed that little purple paint stick she was rubbing over his eyelids and shoved it into her eye- The female in the mirror smiled a little, her pale pink lips parting. "That's it," Mishel smiled too, believing that Zephyr was agreeing with her. "See? No need to pout." She put the little paint wand down and picked up some other sort of brush. "You're so pale...almost white, hrm, I guess it's always been this way. I never looked at your skin tone closely." No, Zephyr thought, it hasn't always been this pale. It's as if Nexus drained the color out of me. "Oh don't start pouting again," Mishel patted his shoulder. "In four hundred years you won't even remember your life before this day." "How are we, ladies?" Nexus asked, walking in with a fresh cigarette. The habit was seriously starting to bother Zephyr. But then a lot of things about Nexus were seriously starting to bother him. Nexus raised an eyebrow at Zephyr. "Mishel, I thought I asked you to get Zephy in something nice." He gestured to the brown pants, jacket, and white shirt. "She can't go to a party in men's clothes. It's not a very good costume." He exhaled a smoke ring. "Why just look at her, Mishel, do you honestly believe anyone would mistake a bust size like that as belonging to a man?" Zephyr's ear tips and cheeks turned the brightest red one can imagine. "I tried, sir," Mishel protested. "She refuses to change." "Eh? Not even into a shirt she could button up all the way?" Nexus whistled. "You surprise me, Zephy, you've adjusted even faster than I thought possible." Zephyr yanked a fist over his jacket, shutting it up to his neck. Nexus looked amused. "Really, dear, you don't have anything I haven't seen many many times before. Maybe something *you* haven't but nothing I've-" "Sir," Mishel interrupted. "Is there something you needed?" Zephyr silently thanked Mishel. She maybe an annoying bother, but at least she was trying to be sympathetic. Best to be on guard...it had to have some catch to it. "Hrmph," Nexus brushed her off. "You don't like the costume, Zephy? It's a lovely little outfit. It used to belong to your grandmother Lisha. I'm sure you'll fit into it nicely. Really, it might be old, but somethings always look beautiful." Zephyr snapped. He hadn't spoken a word since Mishel had taken him from the alter room, but he decided it was time. "You like it so much, you wear it!" It was a good thing he'd said it fast, before he'd had a chance to hear this new voice that came from his mouth. It lacked any masculine qualities...it wasn't husky, it wasn't low-pitched or deep. It was *nothing* like *his* voice! For an insane second he wondered if someone else had come into the room and said what he was thinking. Nexus threw back his head and laughed. "Oh for Akugou's sake, I'm just trying to get some sort of response out of you, dear!" He slung an arm around Zephyr's shoulders, and could still manage to bend his elbow to take a drag off his cigarette. Zephyr's shoulders must have been narrower now. "It really could be worse my dear, Zephy," Nexus replied gently. "You aren't dead...and you seem quite sane. A little upset, maybe, but sane. And this pretty little face *is* yours now...you really ought to get used to it. This," he took Zephyr's chin in his hand, "is who you are now. From now to all eternity; until you turn to dust and return to the Dark Mother." "My name," Zephyr began fiercely, "is *Zephyr*. It doesn't matter if I look like this because I'm still more of a man than you'll ever be." Nexus laughed and stood. "Good, you've still got your spirit! I've always loved that about you. Come, Mishel, let's leave *Zephyr* by herself for a while. I'm sure she's just nervous about changing in front of me." He winked. "That'll change with time." Zephyr growled and tossed some random object at Nexus' head as he left. It clattered against the closed door. He leapt up and began to pace. There had to be some way out of this. Think, think! You're a Shadow Demon, dammit! You were born and raised to screw people over! "There's got to be a way to get him back for this," Zephyr muttered out loud, then regretted it. He still didn't like this voice. Gingerly he poked at the mage costume. "What the hell kinda of self-respecting female would wear this costume?!" It consisted of a short, tight black leather skirt, a nearly non-existent white top, and a knee-length white over-coat. That cannot possibly be big enough, Zephyr thought as he looked at the shirt. But looking as he looked at the outfit the faint stirrings of a plan began to form. He could maybe get out, and go find that Shadow Angel. Angels were supposed to know about all *three* of the magic lores, even the two forbidden for Shadow Demons to practice. Not to mention that the Angel could no doubt cause Nexus a lot of grief. He picked up the shirt. "I'd better hope Nexus hasn't made it public knowledge of what happened. It'll be a very difficult thing to explain if I get caught leaving." Chapter Five: Local: Lir's Apartment Moon came down the stairs, and twirled a little. "Well?" "You just came up with that?" Sarah asked. Moon tied the waist-sash on the white knee length over-coat, covering the black skirt and blue shirt. Her blue boots went up to her knees. "Actually...I was going to wear it anyway." "It's lacking something..." Lir began. "Like a big rod and a pink bow!" Gibbon added. "Or a pointy black hat..." Ash muttered. Lir tossed a leather-bound book to Moon. "Here! Every sorceress needs a spell-book for show. I think we're already." "Good," Sarah stood. "We might just make it on time for the party to start." Local: The Mansion Nexus whistled some tune as he walked back to the room. After knocking grandly on the door, and not getting any answer, he went inside. The room was empty. Both the costume and the female were gone. "Dammit," he hissed, pulling out a cell phone. "Seta, I need you to find someone for me. Female, silver hair. She'll be wearing a white knee-length over-coat. Find her and bring her to me." He snapped the phone shut. "This is the last time I let a pretty face keep me from killing something." Tonia was a little surprised to see the group come out with Sarah. Once everyone had been introduced, and Moon apologized for making them wait...again, they went off to the party. There actually wasn't enough room in the car, so Lir and the others said they could manage the block walk to the Mansion; Sarah and Tonia went ahead in the car. "So, we're going hunting?" Moon asked as soon as the vehicle was out of sight. "Hai," Lir nodded. "It sounds like there's going to be a lot of Shadow Demons at the party." "Explain 'hunting'," Gibbon requested. "Simple. See a demon...slay the demon." "Oh, that's fun." Gibbon muttered. "How about you do the 'see-a-demon-slay-the-demon' thing and I'll enjoy watching all the lovely anime babes?" "You might want to lose the Honey costume," Ash told him. "Ooooooh I plan t-" Moon whacked him with the book. "Dirty Gibbon!" "Ouch!" He rubbed his arm. "Look, we'll 'mingle' for a while, but I just want you guys to know that it's all going to end up the same." Lir smiled a little. "So we might as well have fun at it. We could see who gets the most..." "Are you feeling all right, Lir?" "Nani?" Moon folded her arms. "You're acting stra-aaaaaange...." "I'm just trying to be happy," he shrugged. "I not-think you're drunk," Gibbon muttered. "Guys, we're at the house, so shut up!" Ash hissed. A black guy with a shaved head, and red eyes was standing at the door. "Invitation?" "We're guests of Nexus," Lir told him. "Oh..." the guy nodded. "Go in then." "Who was that?" Ash asked. "Shadow Demon. Nexus is the big demon in this area. He calls the shots," Lir told them. "And that guy's going to tell him that we used his name to get in." "There's going to be Shadow Demons watching us from now on," Moon concluded. "Everyone split up." "Gibbon," Lir said. "Why don't you go find Sarah? Ash, you come with me." "What about me?" Moon asked. "Want to go see if you can find out what kind of Demons we've got here?" Moon nodded. "I can do that." "That sounds dangerous," Gibbon interjected. "I'll be okay," she told him. "I used to do it all the time with Gabe." "Yeah, well you're not with him," Gibbon replied. "I wouldn't trust this schnook," he stuck his thumb at Lir, "as far as I could throw him. You're not going off by yourself. Not with Demons around." Moon folded her arms. "I can take care of myself, GG!." "No, you can't." He told her. "You need someone to-" "Hey, you guys made it!" Sarah waved coming over with Tonia and a few other people. "This is Leslie, Jenn, Steve and Natalie." "Leslie?" Moon started to say something, but Ash quieted her with a look. Leslie smiled. She was a tall girl with light brown hair, and green eyes. "Hi, Sarah's told me you guys are from out of town." The slur in her speech was just evident. "Are you drunk?" Moon asked. Leslie laughed. "I've only had a couple!" She held up five fingers. " 'Sacre, Sacre, Sacre Charlamange...' " "Leslie! Don't sing that song!" Sarah begged. Steve, the only guy stepped, forward. "Oh, Cloud Strife. Right on. I love Cloud. How did you get your hair to go like that?" Ash looked at Steve's gothic outfit, complete with cape, and make-up. "It just does." "Oh. You look so good." "Oh, thanks. You're...I'm sorry. I can't lie. That middle part does nothing for you. Maybe if you pushed all your hair back from your face..." Steve looked at Sarah. "Oh, right on. Is he great?" Sarah shrugged. "I dunno. Ash, are you gay?" Ash blinked. "As in happy?" She shook her head. "Would you like to dance, Natalie?" Ash asked, changing the subject quickly. "Sure," Natalie replied. She was wearing a white shift, and an arm band. "Dancing...perfect. May I, Sarah?" Lir asked. "Huh? Oh, yeah. Sure." They followed Natalie and Ash out onto the dance floor. "Dance with me, Steve! I love this song!" Jenn protested. "GG!," Moon whispered, "does she remind you dangerously of Dreamer?" "Hai, let's get away from her before she eats us," he replied. "Excuse me," a finger tapped Moon on the shoulder. "Would you like to put your coat somewhere?" She turned to see a tall girl with blond hair and blue eyes. "Okay," she nodded. "Just follow me" She led Moon behind the stairs into a hallway. "I don't see any place to put my coat," Moon told her. "Oh, I wouldn't worry too much about that." The girl told her. "I'd worry about what Nexus is going to do to you. He sounded mighty pissed. I don't who you are, bitch, but you're in serious trouble." "Oh, Seta, you should watch your language in front of a lady," a guy's voice said. He came up behind Moon. "Even if she really isn't a true lady. After all, there's a difference between looking like a woman and truly being one, isn't there, Zephyr?" "Zephyr?" Seta peered down at Moon. "But, sir..." A rough hand grabbed Moon's shoulder and pulled her around. It was the first time she'd seen a Shadow Demon this close. He had purple hair, and green-blue skin. Gold rings surrounded his blue-green eyes. The lit cigarette dangled from his lips. "Dammit, Seta! This isn't Zephyr! You've screwed-up!" "Sir...isn't Zephyr a gu-" Seta began. A bullet planted itself in her left eye, and then another in her right one. She dropped to the ground. "Well, well, well...." Nexus looked at his down henchman. "This ought to be interesting." Okay...so you're done. You've read the part with Zephyr and now are probably doing one of two things: (1) Giving me wierd looks; or (2) Laughing your @$$ off like my RL bud Sarah was. So there's there 4 options here. (1) You're offended and this story bothered you too much for you to continue with the series for the risk that there might be more odd things ahead; (2) You've read Realm Sagas...you know what I'm capable and even if it bugs and offends you you're going to let it go and stay with me; (3) You're laughing your @$$ off (like Sarah was) In this case you're probably a fellow Ranma 1/2 fan. Glad to know. There will be much of that...minus the water fights andpantie-stealing. Someone will probably be hit over the head with a mallet tho if it's any consilation. ^_~ (4) You have no idea what I'm talking about. Who's Zephyr again? In that case, nevermind. ^__^ #3 has got some more potentially offense stuff...oh well. "Make no apologies" is my motto. Actually my motto is "Who wants to be normal?" but "make no apologies" makes more sense in this situation. Anyway, flame me if you like. ~Moon~
