High Class Act Chapter 2- Scenes From the Country Club When everybody arrived at the gates of the country club, the gatekeeper was shocked to see the Vipermobile. Eyeing the van suspiciously, he asked everyone to get out. Upon seeing Candy, he asked, "Are you Candida Williams?" "Yes," Candy lied. "These your friends?" "Mm-hm." "Go on in, your aunt's waiting for you up at the clubhouse." With that, everyone scrambled back into the Vipermobile and drove through the gates and, leaving the Vipermobile with a valet, walked into the clubhouse. Clarinda met them at the entrance. "Candy, you're here!" she said when she saw her "niece". Then, catching sight of all who had come with Candy, Clarinda asked, "Are all these people your friends?" "Sure are," said Candy, and she proceeded to introduce them. Once she had finished, her "aunt" said, "Come and meet my friends," as she led the group into the dining hall. Before seating her guests, Clarinda introduced them to Beatrice, Victoria, Gertrude, Madeline, Lucille, and Charlotte. "This is my niece, Candida, but she prefers to be called Candy," Clarinda began. As she introduced everyone else, she tripped over many of their names. "Pleasure to meet you," said Lucille. "That is a lovely suit," Madeline told Candy. "Where did you buy it?" Candy told the truth. "I didn't buy it. Mom gave it to me for a dinner party, and I altered it. Would've removed the bows, but they're the only thing holding the vest on." Clarinda was stunned. Candida would've left the suit as it was. But the other socialites at the table murmured with interest. "As a matter of fact," continued Candy, seeing that she had everyone's interest, "almost every outfit I've got I made myself. I mostly-" "Candy, why don't you and your friends take a seat?" Clarinda interrupted. So Candy and her friends filled the last remaining chairs at the long table. Not one of them looked too happy. Most of the food looked unfamiliar, and the classy orchestra music that filled the room was not music to their ears. Once they were seated, Charlotte said, "So, Candy, tell me about this dinner party." "Well," began Candy, "the Johnsons were throwing this dinner party. My family and a few others were invited. Unfortunately, my next door neighbor Luann was invited, too. Seeing her was enough to take away my appetite. I only stayed until dessert, then I escaped." A breif silence followed, which was broken by Gertrude when she said, "So, tell us about this Luann." "What's there to tell?" Candy replied. "She has absolutly no fashion sense and is a total bitch! Has been ever since her divorce. I hate her!" "And she wonders why she can't get a date!" Bonnie added. "Maybe if she hadn't dyed her hair blue and if she was a little nicer..." Another awkward silence followed, this time broken by Candy, who said, "Think she's bad, wait till you hear about her ex!" "Candy," said Clarinda, "I think we should let your friends talk. Do any of you have anything to say?" Candy's friends talked, briging up topics that refined socialites wouldn't. They even mentioned disgusting things, like past incidents of vomiting and what was the best altitude for hawking loogies. Before they finished, many of the chairs were empty, and Clarinda, Beatrice, Victoria, Gertrude, Lucille, Madeline, and Charlotte were seconds from fainting. "That's enough now, guys," Candy said slyly. "We don't want to give ol' Aunt Clarinda a coronary." Neither Candy nor her friends said another word. For the next minute or two, the only sound in the entire room was the music from the orchestra. "Will somebody stop that damn music!" Raxel exclaimed. "It's getting on my nerves!" A surprised Victoria asked, "What's wrong with the music?" "I hate it!" was the reply. "Is a different band, or at least a DJ, coming in soon?" "No," answered Beatrice. "We don't listen to this rock-and-roll music of yours here!" "We'll see about that!" Raxel shed his shirt, ran up to the orchestra, and said, "Beat it! I'm the musician here!" Once the orchestra had left, Raxel began singing one of his favorite songs, accompanying himself with his guitar. Almost immediately, Otto shed his shirt and started dancing. Tokio followed his example, as did all the other guys. Then the girls took off their blouses or dresses and joined the guys. Clarinda nearly fainted when she saw what was under Candy's vest! More and more socialites left the clubhouse in disgust. By the time Raxel had stopped playing and his friends had stopped dancing, there was no one else there except Beatrice, Madeline, Charlotte (who were very displeased), and Clarinda (who was mortified). "I can't believe your behavior!" Clarinda said to her "niece". "Nor can I believe the crowd you run with! I don't think the country club is the right place for you or them!" "So?" Candy replied. "So next Friday, I want to join you and your group in your normal activities. I want to see what has turned you from a sweet young lady to an ill-mannered wench." Everyone was taken aback. They didn't say a word until they were on the road. Candy was nearly in tears. "All that for nothing! She still thinks I'm her niece, but now she think's I'm a 'wench', whatever that is!" "Well, I hope you realize that there's no way in hell I'm letting that awful woman within ten feet of my father's van!" said Jim. "I know," said Candy. "I've got to ditch her somehow!"
