Two days ago, Bonnie's sister Heather had married, and Candy was getting an earful of all that had happened. "I wish I could've come," Candy told her friend, "but I couldn't break my date." "I understand, even though I don't have a boyfriend," Bonnie said. Then she said, "Hey, think you'll get married?" "Maybe. But not right away, 'cause keep in mind that I am just sixteen, and so is Tokio." She was very doubtful about this, though, because lately she seemed to be the only one interested in the relationship. "I know that. See you at school tomorrow." The girls, neither having anything else to say, hung up. At school the next day, Jim approached Candy in the hallway. "Tokio wants to you to meet him in his room after school," he said, "and come alone." So Candy went over to Tokio's a little after school ended. When she got to Tokio, she noticed that he looked as though he had major worries on his mind. "I don't think there's any easier way to say this," he said, "but it's over." "What??" Candy exclaimed, nearly hyperventilating. "How could you say that?" "Is it wrong for a guy's feelings to change? My feelings for you have faded. I only like you as a friend now. Don't ask why, I just do." Candy didn't answer. She just sat silent until Tokio said, "You can go now, that's all I had to say." So Candy left, but not before bursting into tears. Bonnie did her best to comfort her friend. "So your just friends now," Bonnie told Candy, "big deal! There are plenty of other guys out there! Decent guys!" "You're right," Candy said. "There are other fish in the sea." Not very long after, Candy had a new man: Raxel. However, this was just a crush. Raxel had no idea that Candy liked him as more than a friend. For weeks, Candy looked dreamily at Raxel and often daydreamed of the two of them together. Then finally, she said, "This is stupid! Raxel doesn't even know I love him! But how will I know he loves me? I can't ask him out because I'm afraid he'll refuse!" Laura, who had heard, gave Candy a bit of advice. "Jim didn't know I was interested in him at first. And like you I was afraid to ask him out right away. So I just asked him what type of girl he liked. The description he gave fit me perfect, and he ended up asking me out." Candy decided to try that. She went to Raxel and asked him what type of girl he liked. "Well," he said, "I'm looking for a gal with good fashion sense and sophistication. I'd really like one with blond hair and blue eyes like me. Why do you ask?" "Just curious," replied Candy, trying not to look or sound dejected. She had good fashion sense, but she didn't fit any other part of the description he gave. "Bonnie, I give up!" she told her friend the next day. "Tokio dumped me, and Raxel, like his blood brother, only likes blondes." "What about those other guys we hang out with?" asked Bonnie, "What's wrong with them?" "They're not worth it. Bahn's seeing what's-her-name, Picky's too immature, Sanman- well, that's obvious, and Mahler plays the field." "Maybe you'll meet someone tonight." Every Friday night, Bonnie, Jim, Laura, Candy, Picky, Grace, Tokio, Bahn, Jane, Sanman, Raxel, Mahler, Otto, Heather, Ruth, and Edna would board the Vipermobile (an old custom van belonging to Jim's father) and go out on the town. That night was a Friday night. However, when they got to Jim's garage, everyone saw that there was a note under one of the Vipermobile's winshield wipers. Grace snatched it up and read it aloud. "To whoever gets this," she read, "I'm moving to Armstone City and bringing a group with me. We should be landing at the airport around noon next Sunday. Would you meet us there?" "Who's it from?" Heather asked, "and when was it written?" "There's no name," Grace replied, "and next Sunday from the date on here is the day after tomorrow." Everyone just stood staring. Then finally Picky asked what everyone else wouldn't. "Think we can do it?" "I guess we can," Otto answered. "It's not like we have anything else planned."
