America Online Internet Connection Answerman: Thursday, Nov 16,1995 9:00 ET Topic: The Best and Worst of the Web Host: Kevin Savetz, "Netanswers" CJ Dox: Welcome to another night with AnswerMan Tonight: worst and best of the Web Netanswers: Tonight we are taking about the BEST and WORST Web pages. There are a lot of web pages out there some are great, and some are horrible. Most are somewhere in between. There are even Web pages which list (in the authors' opinions) all the best (or worst) web pages. So tonight I'll point you to some of the best and worst pages, and we'll take about what makes a good or bad Web site. Please try to keep you questions in these areas. Lectrospud: Is there a way you can find someones e-mail address? Netanswers: The most reliable, and often fastest, way to find someone's email address, if you're looking for a specific person, is to call them up and ASK. If you can't do that, there are a variety of services that can help you find someone's email address. Unfortunately, because the Internet is so huge, it's impossible for anyone to keep a complete White Pages of Internet users. For starters, check out the following pages on the Web: How to find somebody's email address: http://kaml1.csi.uottawa.ca:3000/how-to-email.html FAQ: How to find people's E-mail addresses: http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/finding-addresses/faq.html There's a nice search tool called Four11, it's at theURL http://www.four11.com/ -- it claims to contain 1.2 million listings, but remember there are more than 20 million people on the Internet. Esscal: How do you get to see the answers to the questions appearing in Ask answerman? Netanswers: Esscal, they are answered by the CJs, who post the answers to the same message area--topics-- that the questions were posted to. Sometimes it takes a day for the answer to appear, though. Txplant: If you recieve mail through the internet will it be posted in my AOL box? Netanswers: Yes, Tx. Mail to you sent via the Internet will end up in your regular AOL email box. Lectrospud: What is url and how do I get there to try to find an address? Netanswers: A URL is a sort of "address" that points to an Internet resource. A URL looks like: http://www.northcoast.com/index.html The first part (http) says what TYPE of resource the site is (in this case, a World Wide Web page) the second part -- www.northcoast.com -- is the name of the computer that the site is on, and the last part -- index.html -- is the name of the file you want to look at. That URL, happens to be the home page of my Internet service provider in Northern California. :-) If you want to go to a particular URL, assuming you have the Web browser installed, you just go to KEYWORD and enter the URL in the box. (Pick KEYWORD from your GO TO menu bar item.) Since there are no questions in the queue, I will talk a bit about some sites that will point you to the "best of the Web." "Cool site of the day" is at http://cool.infi.net/ -- each ad every day, the creator of this site picks a "cool" Web page for you to peruse. Sometimes it's educational, sometimes it's a business, sometimes it's not even useful-- but it's always cool. Also, check out the NCSA Whats New page which is at the URL: http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/Mosaic/Docs/whats-new.html This is a huge listing of new additions to the Web, most of these are of fairly high quality. There's also the Best of the Web '94 Awards, a site which includes pointers to last year's "best" Web sites. (They're planning a 1995 contest, by the way..) http://wings.buffalo.edu/contest/awards/ Supercity: Want to acces a newspaper section in any Tampa fla. What is path? super newbie Netanswers: Super, there are many newspapers on the net. try using WebCrawler to search for "newspaper tampa" and you may find links to an online paper based there. DKrulik: The computer says that I do not have the correct URL. Netanswers: DKrulik, that means the URL you are trying to access is invalid. Perhaps the computer is temporarily unavailable, or the site is gone forever. Do you have the URL handy? DKrulik: I do not have a specific URL. I just want to explore the web. Netanswers: DKrulik, then try starting with, say, yahoo: http://www.yahoo.com -- it is a good place to start "exploring" the web. And I *know* that URL works. If it doesn't, then something is wrong on your side. GO TO KEYWORD: http://www.yahoo.com. There are no yellow pages available via email, but some are on the Web. California yellow pages: http://www.research.digital.com/SRC/virtual-tourist/CaliforniaYP.html Yellow Pages Superhighway: http://meer.net/kwik-link/ and others... Use WebCrawler to search for "yellow pages" to look. SPERRYSA: Does AOL support the use of Netscape? Netanswers: If you are using Windows you can connect to Netscape via America Online as an external application. Check out the Pro's Corner Internet area for details on how do to this.Mac users currently can't use external applications such as Netscape from AOL. Life is hard. Holt61: Can you tell me where I could find info on bottled water? Netanswers: I did a WebCrawler search for "bottled water" and came up with a suprising amount of material. Try it. I don't know if any of it is useful, but it's worth checking :-) EBTOOTH: Can you tell me where to find all the Secretaries of various Cabinet Offices of the USA? Netanswers: EBT, try http://www.ehnr.state.nc.us/secstate/sos.htm That's the Dept of the Secretary of State Web page. (Sometimes I impress myself.)
