GHZ

A Handful of Gibbon

There was a time when Green Gibbon! updated the Green Hill Zone. Updates were not occasional affairs, or heads up that a new page had been added to the Sonic Team museum. No, there was a time when he would update the site every weekday, writing whatever words of wisdom would spring into his mind. Sure, there were times when he would skip out. Life was a factor, so there were days or even weeks when the front page was silent. But more often than not, he would write something on the front page, even if he hadn’t done anything to the site.

The often comedic musings of GG! gave people a reason to visit often. If you missed an update? You missed it. For the first six years of The GHZ’s existence, there was no archive of the front page posts. The only way you could make sure not to miss anything is if you logged on every day, steadily increasing the small visitor counter on the bottom of the page. These updates were a staple of the site, helping to shape its identity as more than just an information dump. It had character, it had pizzaz, it was something special.

However, it was only a matter of time before Gibbon found he couldn’t maintain such a rigid schedule. He had given up on weekday updates, aiming for a more sensible once-a-week notice, but even that would sometimes be impossible with the burden of adulthood. Thus, he gathered a group of dedicated persons to write for the front page when he was unable to. Trust members of the community would take turns, writing once a week on the front page to make sure it never became lonely.

By the time the site moved to a proper subdomain on Emulation Zone, GG! took over the full duties of the front page once more, changing the schedule to a more flexible "whenever-I-feel-like-it" format. With this new mindset, GG! would also keep up the last few front page posts instead of erasing everything each time. If you missed something, chances are you could catch up on it.

In 2006, the front page updates were integrated into the forum of The GHZ. The last update to the front page by Green Gibbon! was on October 10th, 2007. After an update to the forum software, the system to automatically populate the front page broke. Aside from one post by Bo Bayles in 2008, the system remained broken until 2012, when Big Smile emerged from the depths to finally fix it. By that point, however, Green Gibbon! had moved on from the community he forged.
