The Gonterman Archive

The Blogs

The concept of a blog actually predates David Gonterman’s career on the World Wide Web. Though it wasn’t called as such, Internet scholars generally agree that the first weblog was made by Justin Hall in 1994. It would take a few years before the concept would be popularized with sites like LiveJournal and Blogger, but when it did, it changed the very nature of what the Internet looked like.

Back in the late 90’s, when websites were slowly updated with strings of common html, the idea of updating something everyday with the musings of one’s life was a tall order. Once it became standardized, it was as easy as typing a string of consciousness, not bothering to reread what was typed even if it didn’t make a whole lot of sense. It was a digital diary, recording the purests of thoughts, one that you could look back in a decade's time, cringe, and then try to immediately delete it from public view.

Once it was readily available, David Gonterman was quick to hop onto the blogging bandwagon. After all, he was no stranger to writing about his thoughts on life. The Foxfire Newsletter, now almost completely lost, could be seen as an early version of blogging. Not only was it a forum for him to talk about his latest projects, but also his views on politics, religion, and a slew of other topics that one usually avoids discussing in pleasant company.

To this day, Gonterman continues to blog, trying to chronicle his life at least once a month.

Though mentioned on the front page of this archive, it must be repeated again: the views expressed by David Gonterman are his and his alone. This site does not endorse his viewpoints, and simply showcases them here for historical purposes. If one agrees, disagrees, or feels the urge to judge him, that is up to the individual reader.
